Engineer Johnbosco Onunkwo (Akaekpuchionwa), the founder, Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation has postponed birthday to honor the younger generation (the youths) and the great Nation.
In a communique released below, he explained the reasons behind this rationale.
I was looking up to a big celebration on the 31st of October to mark my 45th birthday and also the first official outing of my son, Johnbosco Jnr.
But having witnessed the events of the past few days, I have come to terms that this is a time for sober reflection and an internal reevaluation of who we are as young Nigerians.
The innocent blood flowing on the streets of Nigeria and the loss of properties across the country is not something I personally will look at and continue thinking about birthday celebrations and my son’s outing.
As a young Nigerian working and living in Nigeria, I have had some unpleasant experiences with SARS teams directly and indirectly. For me personally, the protest #EndSARS was a justified protest which every young, well-meaning Nigerian has every reason to support.
The ugly turn of events has made me decide to cancel my already scheduled birthday so as to have ample time to reflect, sympathise with individuals, officers and men of security agencies who lost their lives in the whole saga.
As a young Nigerian, I feel the pains of all of us and I firmly believe that our cries have been heard loud and clear.
It is time to get off the streets so that miscreants will not jeopardise our good actions and intents.
It is time to harness our powers and ensure that as young people, through other meaningful approaches, we ensure that our rights and privileges are upheld in a united Nigeria.
To all who have been looking up to my 45th birthday celebration, those invited and those yet to be invited, I am sorry to announce that all preparations have been cancelled.
It is my wish to use this 45th birthday as a day of reflection on the way forward for our dear nation and the younger generation.
I highly regret the inconveniences this may cause my team and each and every one of you that have sacrificed your time and resources to make my 45th birthday a memorable one. A later date will be announced and communicated in the near future for a befitting birthday celebration and my son’s dedication.
