The donation was done to serve as relief towards the efforts of the home in catering for the orphans, the aged, the widows, the physically challenged and the destitute in the society. This charity gesture was done in line with one of the principles of the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, ‘For Humanistic Ideals’. Also, it was part of our activity to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty which is marked on the 17th October of every year.

Making the presentation on behalf of the association, Mr Ogundimu Afolabi, the first mate appreciated the home for what it has been doing for humanity and encouraged them not to relent in their good works. He also prayed God strengthen their efforts. Receiving the items on behalf of Gideon Orphanage Home, Mrs Adekunle Rachael, the caregiver of the home, thanked the National Association of Seadogs for its kind gesture and prayed God should bless all so that they can do more for the orphanage and for humanity.

The National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity is a not-for- profit, non-political and non-governmental agency concerned with striving for the attainment of a just, humane and egalitarian society through advocacy, charity, medical mission and other programmes. Joining hands to better humanity and strive for a better society for all is a course to which all should be committed. This is at the crust of ‘who and why we are’ as the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity. This statement was made by Mr Adebesin Ayodele, the capoon, Ash Montana Deck.

And the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty is one of such worthy courses which every concerned and well-meaning individual should be part of. It is a day set aside to remind us about the reality of poverty among the vast majority of people in the society. There is extreme poverty, violence and hunger in the land. The UN noted that poverty is a violation of human rights and there was an affirmation of the need to come together to ensure these rights are respected. The global pandemic and the aggressive inflation in the country escalated by a wide range of issues have further deepened the level of poverty in the country. More and more people sink deep into the abyss of poverty as the rate of insecurity increases; unemployment and underemployment rates are unimaginably high, corruption aggressively endemic, as the resources of all are imprisoned by few.

There is a great need for all hands to rise up consciously and conscientiously against all forms of poverty.
He added that Ash Montana and Pentagun Decks of the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity appeal to the government at all levels to do more in terms of their policies and programmes to help tackle poverty among the vast majority of Nigerians. Governmental agencies, private individuals of means and substance, cooperate bodies, non-governmental organisations and the society at large should do more individually and in collaboration to help tackle poverty in any forms.

Poverty has been described as a state of being poor, deprivation or insufficiency. It is not having enough of or not having at all the basic needs including food, clothing, shelter, money and so on. The World bank described poverty thus: ‘’…hunger; lack of shelter; being sick and not being able to see a doctor; not having access to school and not knowing how to read; not having a job; it is fear for the future, living one day at a time…Poverty has many faces’’. It is a rather complex societal situation with no one causes and certainly there are a plethora of solutions which could be adopted by a collaborative efforts of all, sincerity on the part of the government in their policies and their implementations, and so on.
