PYRATES CALL FOR MORE EFFORTS IN ELIMINATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS IN THE SOCIETY

The National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Ash Montana, Aqua Kanata, Hudson and Rockies Decks with the support of Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services on Saturday 26th November organised a public awareness talk and empowerment for survivors of gender-based violence, widows, neglected and indigent women. The event was to mark the 2022 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

According to the President, Ash Montana Deck, Mr Adebesin Ayodele, speaking on behalf of the group, the Association is committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls through advocacy projects, services, actions and partnership. The association, in the statement, urged government at all levels, security agencies, faith-based organisations, local community leaders and members, schools, NGOs, CSOs and families to join the fight to end all forms of violence against women and girls in our community.

Speaking in the event, the guest speaker, Mrs Kazeem Wunnola, Director, Department of Women Empowerment Services, Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services, noted that 1 in 3 women/girls will experience physical and emotional/or sexual violence from a partner or sexual violence from a non-partner. According to her, biological, social and cultural factors like ignorance, polygamy, female genital mutilation and widowhood rites encourage GBV. she admonished victims to speak out; and society should listen to survivors and believe them. She also called on parents to take care of their children, particularly the girl child to ensure they do not fall victim of gender-based violence.

Several items including; deep freezer, petrol-powered grinding machines, hair dryers and ovens were donated to some of the women who are survivors of gender-based violence, some widows, neglected and indigent women.
